Agency vehicles may be available; however, mileage is reimbursed for some activities requiring use of personal vehicles.  The selected applicant must be able to attend approximately 3 working days of staff development orientation in Lytle, TX.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselors (LCDCs) deliver a full range of services to include direct care to adults and children/adolescents in an outpatient setting.  Services include individual, group, and family counseling; assessment and recovery planning; chemical dependency education; andrelapse prevention.  Counselors will establish and maintain good working relationships with local schools, probation, judges, and other community resources.  Counselor must be a recovery role model for individuals enrolled in Camino Real Community Services (CRCS}.  LCDCs determine what willhelp individuals reduce their risk of relapsing and increase their chances of becoming a productive member of the community.  CRCS priority populations served will include adults with severe, persistent mental illness (SPMI) and their families, to include those with dual substance use disorders (SUD), and children, and adolescents, with qualifying mental/emotional conditions.  LCDCs will screen and assess for substance use, psychosocial and environmental status of individuals and coordinate referral of individuals to clinical and other resources and services.  LCDCs have basic knowledge of the Counseling 12 Core Functions of drug and alcohol substance abuse programs and treatment; and of the 12 Step Program of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous; basic knowledge of the criminal justice system; basic knowledge of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methods and techniques; basic knowledge of Dual Diagnosis Treatment; and residential placement process through OSAR.  LCDCs have a commitment to uphold and adhere to the Code of Ethics as outlined by the CSCD and the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and Texas Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse.  LCDCs communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, organize and report data, and work with a team of professionals to implement team strategic approaches to work assignments.  LCDCs are proficient in operating Windows-based word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.  LCDCs document work daily utilizing agency approved softwareClinical supervision will be provided by appropriate staffLCDCs constantly exercise vigilance in maintaining confidential files and reports and contribute to CRCS stated purposesPosition has set productivity standards, which must be met monthly.  Use of personal vehicles may be required.  May require travel between sites.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Must be a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) licensed to practice in the State of Texas.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • You must possess good computer skills.
  • Familiarity with HIPPA (Health Information Privacy and Portability Act).

Applicants must meet the below minimum qualifications to be eligible for LCDC position.  Academic degrees must be from a regionally accredited college or university.

PREFERRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants who possess one or more of the following additional qualifications are preferred:
 
  • One (1) year of direct care working with individuals with a substance use disorder (SUD).
  • One (1) year of experience working with individuals with mental illness and/or dual diagnosis in a community setting.
  • Bilingual, English/Spanish
  • Work experience in a health care/clinic environment.
  • Familiarity with psychiatric and mental health related terminology to include crisis response.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
 
  • Knowledge of individual needs/characteristics associated with severe and persistent mental illness.
  • Knowledge of community-based service delivery system and the role of case management.
  • Knowledge of local community resources, how to access those services and use them effectively.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques and practices of psychology, behavioral science, social work, chemical dependency, and the functioning of mental health hospitals and clinics.
  • Knowledge of procedures for assessing the substance use, psychosocial and environmental status of clients.
  • Knowledge of counseling theory techniques and resources.
  • Knowledge of trauma informed care, which emphasizes physical, psychological, and emotional safety, to help survivors rebuild a sense of control and empowerment.
  • Knowledge of substance use and crisis intervention techniques and resources.
  • Knowledge of policies, practices, procedures, and standards within area of assignment.
  • Knowledge of advocacy groups, clinical and other service providers, and community outreach services.
  • Knowledge of principles and procedures in documenting with CMBHS system .
  • Knowledge of computer equipment to include word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and variety of software.
  • Skills for service delivery and coordination of referrals of individuals to clinical resources and other services.
  • Skills with needs assessments, recovery planning and responding to individual's changing needs.
  • Skills with contributing to a treatment recovery team of physicians, nurses, counselors, and others.
  • Skills for independent, organized, and efficient work and effective verbal and written communication.
  • Skills for documenting work, as well as drafting reports and recommendations for administrative use.
  • Skills for screening, assessment, intervention, and referral of individuals for substance use problems.
  • Skills for counseling and providing crisis and other assistance to clients.
  • Skills for administering various clinical and other screening tests.
  • Sills for determining types of counseling, social service provider and other services indicated for individuals.
  • Skills of obtaining information from clients and other sources.
  • Skills of problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Skills of both verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to make accurate and appropriate counselor inferences, assessments, and judgments.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other professionals, individuals, and groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, other CRCS employees.
  • Ability to exercise tact, show initiative, and use good judgment in dealing with people in crisis.
  • Ability to develop productive and outcome focused relationships with individuals and family members.
  • Ability to advocate effectively for an individual in the target population.
  • Ability to assess substance use, psychosocial and environmental status of clients through screening instruments, and determine clinical and other education/treatment resources and services needed.
  • Ability to make recommendations based on the level of the client's risk and need for substance use intervention and any other service/resource needed and resolve obstacles to service delivery.
  • Ability to use the DSM-5 to determine presence or absence of substance use disorder.
  • Ability to facilitate referral to alcohol/drug classes for people who have been referred by the legal system.
  • Ability to conduct psycho-social educational classes regarding substance use rehabilitation, cognitive skill development, and relapse prevention techniques.
  • Ability to provide substance use intervention services, identify individuals in at-risk situations and facilitate treatment solutions and need for alternative environmental surroundings.
  • Ability to apply counseling theory, practice, and procedures.
  • Ability to work efficiently, both independently and as a team member.
  • Ability to manage time well and meet timelines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to maintain clear and legible documentation.
